Lean Thinking, Lean Manufacturing – 5 S

Many people, including some in the sales profession, believe that sales training is a waste of time and money. A popular belief is that sales people are born to sell, and that an individual either “has it” or they don’t, and nothing can be done to change it.

It tookus about a week to actually finish the process. By the end of two days we had made a lot of progress, but it was essential that we complete the project entirely. I’m certain that things would have returned to “normal’ if we had not followed all five steps. It is very difficult to change a shop culture, but it can be done.

Immediate results. This is very helpful so that workers can see something positive happening. Since there is no time for them to object, their potential resistance is overcome by the nature of the blitz.

If you have Supervisors who have been there their whole lives, are they keeping up with the times on their roles and responsibilities? Do you just take their word for why something is done or not done?

Another innovation that I was impressed that Siemens was using was the use of webcams. Siemens has set up a series of webcams that clients can use to not only monitor the work done on products, but to see if the warehouse is running low on product. If the client notices by looking at the webcam feed that more products need to be produced they can call up and order more. This is another way that Siemens is trying to use lean soluciones y materiales and JIT to help become more efficient.

I was highly skeptical of this idea at first because I had spun my wheels for so long on every new program that the managers learned at the latest seminar. Most of these programs just took our time and yielded little or nothing in the way of results. When I heard that it was Japanese, I got interested. At the time, they were decimating our auto industry and I figured they must know something we didn’t.
